UK to Join Talks on EU Ukraine Loan Package

The UK plans to open negotiations on joining the European Union’s €90bn loan package for Ukraine, as it responds to pressure from US President Donald Trump’s administration for Europe to take greater responsibility for its own security.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer is expected to announce at the European Political Community summit in Yerevan, Armenia, that London wants to work with the EU to provide key military equipment for Ukraine.

The loan, finalized by the EU in April, is expected to cover about two-thirds of Kyiv’s needs over the next two years. Most of the funding will go toward defense.

The British government has also said participation in the program could create new opportunities for British companies, particularly in the defense sector.

London also plans to impose another package of sanctions on Russian companies in an effort to disrupt their military supply chains.
