London Sees Dual Mass Protests over Migration and Gaza
Tens of thousands of people filled central London on Saturday during two major protests on contrasting themes. One demonstration opposed high levels of migration and the alleged Islamization of Britain; the other expressed support for Palestinians and commemorated Nakba Day, marking the displacement of Palestinians during the creation of Israel in 1948.
Police deployed around 4,000 officers in what they described as the largest public order operation in recent years. By mid-afternoon, 31 people had been detained.
The anti-immigration march was organized by activist Tommy Robinson, who has criticized Islam and migration and whom Prime Minister Keir Starmer has accused of spreading hate. The protest drew thousands of people carrying British flags and banners opposing the government.
At the same time, pro-Palestinian demonstrators marched through the streets demanding an end to the war in Gaza. Police have warned that similar protests regularly give rise to incidents motivated by religious or racial hatred.
