Streeting Challenges Starmer for Labour Leadership

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is facing open rebellion within the Labour Party. Former health minister Wes Streeting has announced his candidacy for the party leadership following his resignation from government, putting himself in contention for the post of prime minister. The situation has drawn comparisons to Boris Johnson's political downfall, when an intra-party rebellion ultimately forced a change of prime minister, the Bild reports.

Streeting has also made Britain's potential return to the European Union a central theme of his campaign. He described Brexit as a disastrous mistake and said he saw the country's future once again in Europe, arguing that Britain must restore trade ties with the EU and strengthen both its defenses and economy amid rising geopolitical tensions.

Starmer's position has weakened following Labour's significant losses in regional elections dominated by Nigel Farage's right-wing Reform UK party. Calls for his departure have already been backed by dozens of MPs.
