Israel Continues Strikes in Southern Lebanon Despite Extended Ceasefire
Israel carried out air strikes in southern Lebanon on Monday despite a US-brokered ceasefire that has been repeatedly violated by both sides. Hezbollah never formally signed the agreement and has continued attacks on Israeli targets from southern Lebanon throughout the truce period, while Israel has maintained strikes against positions it says are linked to the group.
Lebanese security sources and state media reported multiple new strikes, while Hezbollah announced further attacks against Israeli forces.
Fighting in Lebanon has intensified again following the escalation involving the United States, Israel and Iran. More than 3,000 people have been killed in Lebanon since the conflict resumed on 2 March, according to the Lebanese health ministry.
Israel conducted an overnight strike near the city of Baalbek, which Lebanese media said killed Palestinian Islamic Jihad commander Wael Mahmoud Abd al Halim and his daughter. The Israeli military said it had attempted to minimize civilian casualties.
Meanwhile, Hezbollah announced a drone strike targeting Iron Dome positions in northern Israel, along with additional attacks on Israeli troops in Lebanon.
Despite the extended ceasefire agreement, fighting has continued mainly in southern Lebanon, while diplomatic efforts have so far failed to secure a lasting end to the conflict.
