US Reportedly Plans to Cut NATO Military Commitments
The Trump administration plans to inform NATO allies that the United States will scale back the military capabilities it keeps ready to assist Europe in a major crisis or conflict, according to sources familiar with the matter.
The change concerns the NATO force model, under which member states designate troops available for rapid deployment in the event of war or an attack on an alliance member. The exact composition of the force is classified, but sources say the Pentagon plans to significantly reduce its commitment. The announcement is expected on Friday at a meeting of defense chiefs in Brussels.
Trump has long argued that European countries should bear primary responsibility for the continent's security. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said such a move was to be expected as the alliance works to end what he called "over-reliance on one ally".
The United States also plans to withdraw around 5,000 troops from Europe, including the cancellation of a brigade deployment in Poland. Several European countries fear a further weakening of the US commitment to NATO, although Washington continues to affirm its readiness to protect allies through nuclear deterrence.
