Czech President Pushes NATO for Tougher Russia Response

In an interview with the Guardian, Czech President Petr Pavel called on NATO to respond decisively to Russia's repeated provocations on the alliance's eastern flank. He proposed tougher measures, including shooting down aircraft violating airspace, disconnecting Russian banks from global financial systems and restricting access to the internet and satellite services.

Pavel warned that Moscow is systematically testing the limits of Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty, with provocations often "almost meeting the threshold for Article 5, but always keeping it slightly below that level." Drone incidents over Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, he said, show that Russia is studying NATO's responses and exploiting the alliance's passivity.

Pavel criticized Europe for its lack of a clear policy toward Moscow and urged the United States to increase pressure on Russia, particularly in ceasefire negotiations in Ukraine. He stressed the need for a united and firm response from member states so that the alliance does not appear weak or divided, warning that without a determined response, Russia is likely to escalate its provocations.
