Russia Warns of Rising Nuclear Risks in Asia-Pacific

Russian Security Council Secretary Sergey Shoigu has warned that Australia’s participation in the AUKUS military pact could lead to the deployment of nuclear weapons on Australian territory.

Shoigu made the remarks during security consultations between Russia and member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) on the sidelines of the International Security Forum near Moscow.

He also claimed that Japan and South Korea were preparing for the possible deployment of US nuclear weapons, which he said would have serious implications for regional security.

The former Russian defense minister further argued that the United States was strengthening its military presence in the Asia-Pacific region and expanding the capabilities of allied countries through military and political alliances.

The International Security Forum is being held in the Moscow region from 26–29 May under the auspices of Russia’s Security Council.
