Ukraine and Moldova Move Closer to EU Talks
Ukraine and Moldova could take a significant step toward European Union membership as early as June. The European Commission is expected to propose opening the first cluster of negotiating chapters, covering basic democratic, economic and institutional rules, according to Ukrainian media.
The proposal is due to be presented in Brussels on 16 June. The move would still need backing from member states.
Kyiv’s progress has long been blocked by Hungary under former Prime Minister Viktor Orban. After a change of government in Budapest, new Prime Minister Peter Magyar has signaled a more pragmatic approach, although he has linked support for Ukraine to the unblocking of EU funds for Hungary.
The debate over Ukraine’s possible membership model continues among European leaders. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz recently proposed associate membership without full voting rights.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has rejected that model, saying Ukraine deserves full membership because it is defending Europe from Russia.
