Romania Considers Activating Article 4 of NATO Treaty

Romania is considering activating Article 4 of the North Atlantic Treaty after a drone crashed into a residential complex in the port city of Galati. According to Foreign Minister Oana Toiu, the incident is among the situations in which a NATO member state can request formal consultations with allies, the New York Times reports.

Romanian authorities have attributed the drone to Russia, and NATO has already criticized Moscow for acting irresponsibly. Article 4 allows member states to open discussions on security threats but does not trigger automatic military action.

The provision has come under the spotlight particularly since the start of the war in Ukraine, when several member states faced airspace violations.

Romania has not yet decided whether to activate Article 4, but the incident has raised concerns about the possible spillover of the conflict in Ukraine into the territory of alliance member states.
