More Germans Than Ever Switching to Electric Cars
The share of car owners in Germany switching from combustion engine vehicles to electric cars reached a record 7.5% in the first quarter, according to data from insurer HUK Coburg, the market leader in Germany with around 14.5 million insured vehicles.
The monthly rate rose further to 8.9% in March. HUK Coburg said higher petrol prices following the outbreak of conflict with Iran contributed to growing interest in electric vehicles.
A new government subsidy aimed at low- and middle-income households also played a role. In a survey by YouGov, 18% of licence holders said the allowance would motivate them to consider buying an electric car or to accelerate the decision. Drivers aged under 40 showed the greatest interest. The figures cover fully electric vehicles only, including used cars, and exclude hybrids.
Foreign brands dominated among new electric vehicles registered by private owners. Skoda came first, followed by US manufacturer Tesla. Of the German carmakers, only Opel made the top ten.
