US Startup Tests Humanoid Robots for Military Use in Ukraine

American company Foundation Future Industries is developing humanoid robots for heavy industry and potential military use. The San Francisco-based startup sent two Phantom MK-1 robots to Ukraine this year for pilot tests focused on logistical tasks in hazardous areas.

Chief executive Sankaet Pathak said the technology is intended to replace humans in roles that are dangerous for them. The Ukraine tests assessed the robots' potential for picking up and transporting supplies in areas where soldiers face elevated risk. The current version is not yet ready for large-scale deployment, however, owing to limited payload capacity, battery life and durability.

The company plans to send an upgraded Phantom 2 model to Ukraine later this year and begin tests with the US military within 18 months. It has already secured government contracts worth $24m.

The company has also attracted attention for its ties to Donald Trump's inner circle. Eric Trump, a former investor in the firm, has become its strategic adviser. Experts warn that the military use of humanoid robots raises technical, financial and ethical questions.
