Burnham Would Seek Early UK Election as Prime Minister

Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham, seen as one of Labour's leading candidates to succeed Prime Minister Keir Starmer, would consider calling an early general election if he came to power, the Sun reported on Saturday.

According to the newspaper, citing Labour Party sources, Burnham is also considering appointing Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood as his chancellor. He is seeking to position himself as a more left-wing, economically interventionist alternative to Starmer while maintaining his credibility with pro-Brexit Labour voters.
