Washington Asks Allies to Plug Gaps in NATO Defense
The United States expects European NATO members and Canada to increase the number of aircraft and naval vessels they contribute to the alliance's defense plans, in response to a gradual reduction in US involvement in those areas.
US Air Force General Alexus Grynkewich, who commands US European Command and also serves as NATO's top military commander, said allies could strengthen their contributions in the near term, particularly in manned and unmanned aircraft and naval vessels, to offset the redeployment of some US forces earmarked for the NATO force model in Europe to other regions.
Washington is simultaneously reorienting part of its capabilities toward priorities outside Europe.
