OpenAI Chief Pushes Back on AI Approval Rules

OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman is opposing proposals that would require AI developers to obtain government approval before releasing new models to the public. He plans to present his position during a visit to Washington, where he will discuss the future of AI regulation with members of Congress.

OpenAI is also calling for an expansion of the US Department of Commerce's capacity to assess AI safety. The department already works with technology companies to test AI models, but OpenAI argues the team should be broadened to include specialists in cybersecurity, biological threats and national security to better evaluate the risks posed by new systems.

Altman's stance comes as the AI sector faces increasing regulatory pressure and as OpenAI itself prepares to file confidentially for a public listing.

Rival company Anthropic, the developer of the Claude model filed for an initial public offering earlier this week.

Critics warn that mandatory federal approval could slow the development and commercialization of new technologies, with negative consequences for company earnings. During his Washington visit, Altman is also scheduled to meet House Speaker Mike Johnson to discuss the future direction of AI regulation in the US.
