Republican Resistance to Trump Grows in Congress

Donald Trump is facing growing opposition from within his own party in Congress. Lawmakers who have long avoided openly challenging him have in recent days pushed back on a number of his priorities, including Iran policy, funding for certain projects and domestic surveillance legislation.

The House of Representatives also approved a proposal for further aid to Ukraine and new sanctions on Russia, though the measure faces a presidential veto threat.

Despite the pushback, both Republican and Democratic politicians have stopped short of describing it as open rebellion. Senator Thom Tillis said more and more lawmakers are following the views of their constituents as elections approach. Democrats, however, maintain that Trump continues to hold strong control over the party.

Republican sources attribute the growing discontent to the president's involvement in party nominations and several controversial decisions. Concerns have also been raised over the nomination of Trump ally Bill Pulte as the Director of National Intelligence.

A further test of the president's influence may come with the expected nomination of his former lawyer Todd Blanche for attorney general, a move that could face resistance in the Senate.
