Mercedes Nears Drone Defense Deal With Tytan
Mercedes-Benz is close to entering a partnership with Munich-based start-up Tytan Technologies to develop a mobile air defense system against drones, the Financial Times reported.
The project is intended to protect airports, critical infrastructure and other sensitive sites from the growing threat posed by small drones. Mercedes is expected to provide Sprinter vans and a military version of its G-Class sport utility vehicle, which would serve as mobile platforms for the defense system.
Tytan Technologies would supply interceptor drones designed to destroy hostile unmanned aerial vehicles, either by ramming them or by using a warhead.
According to people familiar with the matter cited by the Financial Times, the two companies are expected to sign a memorandum of understanding on Wednesday. The project reflects growing interest in defense technology among European industrial groups, with drones increasingly seen as a security risk in both civilian and military settings.
