US-Iran Deal Raises Israeli Security Concerns

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is facing growing differences with US President Donald Trump after Washington and Tehran announced a preliminary agreement to end the war.

Israeli officials told Reuters that the proposed deal left key security concerns unresolved and could restrict Israel’s ability to take military action during a 60-day ceasefire.

Washington says the period will be used to negotiate a final agreement, particularly over Iran’s nuclear program. Israeli officials expect the talks may be extended, while Iran’s missile program and its support for armed groups in the region are not thought to be on the agenda.

The two leaders have also clashed over Israeli strikes on Hezbollah targets in Lebanon. Netanyahu has said Israel will retain freedom of action and keep its forces in southern Lebanon to protect its security interests.

The memorandum between the United States and Iran is expected to be signed in Switzerland on Friday. It is intended to halt military operations and reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

The agreement could also create political difficulties for Netanyahu ahead of elections expected in the autumn. A recent poll found that 41% of Jewish Israelis believed their security was a central consideration for Trump, down from 64% in March.
