Moscow Oil Refinery Damaged in Ukrainian Drone Attack
A Ukrainian drone damaged equipment at a Moscow oil refinery owned by Gazprom Neft overnight, according to Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin. He said there were no casualties and emergency services responded to the scene.
The Moscow refinery is one of Russia's most important energy facilities. In 2024, it processed more than 11 million tonnes of crude oil and supplies fuel to the capital region. Moscow has so far avoided the more severe supply disruptions experienced in several Russian regions following a series of Ukrainian attacks on energy infrastructure.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed the strike, describing it as a response to continuing Russian attacks. He said the refinery was hit about 500 km from the Ukrainian border, highlighting Kyiv's ability to strike targets deep inside Russian territory.
It remains unclear whether the attack affected operations at the refinery.
Meanwhile, Russian oil producer Tatneft introduced temporary restrictions on gasoline and diesel sales at all of its filling stations nationwide on Tuesday. The company has not publicly explained the measure and it is unclear whether it is linked to the refinery attack. However, the move comes as Ukraine increases pressure on Russia's fuel sector through long-range strikes.
