Ukraine War Dominates G7 Summit Talks
G7 leaders meeting in Évian-les-Bains, France, have agreed to tighten sanctions on Russia, with the new measures expected to target the country's oil and gas sector, a key source of revenue for financing the war in Ukraine.
The agreement was confirmed by a French diplomatic source, although details of the planned sanctions have not yet been made public.
Russia's invasion of Ukraine was among the central topics of discussion at the summit of the world's leading industrialized democracies. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is attending the meeting in an effort to secure additional military and political support for Kyiv and increase pressure on Moscow ahead of any future peace negotiations.
Ahead of the talks, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the United Kingdom and its allies would continue to apply economic and political pressure on President Vladimir Putin and his inner circle.
According to Starmer, it is necessary to intensify pressure on Russia's war machine to create the conditions for a just and lasting peace in Ukraine.
