Durov Questions Effectiveness of India’s Telegram Ban
Telegram founder Pavel Durov has criticized the Indian authorities' decision to temporarily block the messaging platform, arguing that the measure affected more than 150 million users who had no connection to the alleged wrongdoing.
According to Durov, the ban failed to achieve its objective because those responsible for distributing leaked materials simply moved to other platforms. India imposed the restriction following a scandal involving nationwide medical school entrance examinations.
The exams were overshadowed by allegations that test questions had been leaked, leading authorities to invalidate millions of results. Investigators believe Telegram was one of the platforms used to facilitate the cheating scheme.
Durov argued that the blanket restriction primarily harmed ordinary users while doing little to address the underlying problem.
