G7 Leaders Pledge Tougher Measures Against Russia

Leaders of the G7 countries meeting in Évian-les-Bains, France, reaffirmed their support for Ukraine, including its territorial integrity, and agreed to tighten sanctions on Russia.

The joint statement signals continued backing for Kyiv as it seeks a path toward peace talks with Moscow.

The unified position is notable given differing views within the US administration on how to end the war. The statement followed a meeting between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, which Trump described as “very good”.

G7 leaders also welcomed the preliminary agreement between the United States and Iran and expressed their readiness to support its implementation.

At the same time, they pledged to reduce dependence on the Strait of Hormuz by diversifying energy supply routes and strengthening strategic energy reserves.

Other topics discussed at the summit included access to critical raw materials and global trade imbalances. France is advocating measures aimed at reducing Western dependence on China for key minerals and strengthening economic sovereignty.

The leaders also addressed artificial intelligence, focusing on accountability for AI-driven decisions and the challenge of distinguishing between accurate and false information generated by such systems.
