US Grants Commits $800m to UN Food Agency

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has received a new financial contribution of $800m from the United States, following earlier funding cuts by the Trump administration.

The WFP said the funds will allow it to expand humanitarian aid and respond more quickly to emerging crises at a time when global hunger is at record levels and is expected to rise further.

The United States remains the WFP's largest donor, though its contribution in 2025 fell to approximately $2bn, less than half the previous year's figure.

The new funding is intended to help build food reserves, expand cash assistance programs and maintain supply chains in crisis-affected areas including Lebanon, Haiti and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

US humanitarian aid to UN agencies has declined significantly this year. The State Department also announced this week an additional contribution of $218m to the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF).
