Dozens of Drones Neutralized at World Cup Venues
US authorities have recorded dozens of drone incursions into restricted airspace around stadiums since the start of the World Cup. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) reported 145 incidents at eight tournament venues between 11 and 16 June.
Federal agencies working with local police neutralized 55 drones and seized another 39. Customs and Border Protection, the Federal Protective Service and the Coast Guard were involved in the operations.
Atlanta recorded the highest number of incidents, with authorities documenting 36 violations of restricted airspace. Security forces intervened in 20 cases and confiscated 11 drones.
It is not yet known whether any of the drones were carrying explosives or other dangerous equipment. FBI Director Kash Patel said this week that the agency had thwarted an attack on an Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) event at the White House in which drones carrying explosives were to be used. The FBI also detained a person operating a drone near the fan zone in Atlanta.
US authorities acknowledge that protecting the tournament against drone threats remains a challenge despite the significant resources devoted to security.
