Europe Bids Farewell to Starmer After Resignation
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced his resignation on Monday. While his popularity had declined sharply at home, European leaders praised his efforts to rebuild relations between the United Kingdom and the European Union after Brexit and his support for Ukraine.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said European and Ukrainian security were stronger thanks to Starmer’s leadership.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also thanked the outgoing prime minister, praising his commitment to Ukraine and his support for Kyiv.
The German government described Starmer as a reliable and close partner, while Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin expressed appreciation for his cooperation and leadership.
Starmer became prime minister in 2024 after leading Labour to victory over the Conservatives. Although he sought closer ties with Brussels, he consistently ruled out rejoining the European Union.
US President Donald Trump said Starmer had “failed” on migration and energy policy.
In Russia, Kremlin envoy Kirill Dmitriev welcomed Starmer’s departure, criticizing his positions on Ukraine, migration and the economy.
