WHO Says Congo Ebola Outbreak Is Spreading at Record Pace

The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has reached the highest number of confirmed cases in the first month of any outbreak, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

The outbreak, caused by the Bundibugyo strain, has infected more than 1,000 people and killed 267. WHO officials said the virus had probably been spreading for several months before the outbreak was officially confirmed in mid-May.

The rapid rise in cases was driven mainly by the spread of the disease to Bunia and Mongbwalu, where population density is higher.

Despite the seriousness of the outbreak, health officials have reported some positive signs. The number of hospital beds for Ebola patients has risen to more than 500 in two weeks, while resistance from local communities toward health workers has declined.

The spread of the virus in overcrowded camps for displaced people in eastern Congo remains a particular concern. At least 25 cases have been confirmed there, including 14 deaths.
