Slovakia’s Election Campaign Begins
The election campaign has officially begun in Slovakia ahead of the combined municipal and regional elections, which will take place on October 24.
The Interior Ministry said the law sets out clear rules for campaign financing, including spending limits. These also cover promotional costs incurred up to 180 days before the election was announced, meaning since late December last year.
Only political parties, movements and registered candidates running for office may campaign. Paid campaigning by third parties is not permitted.
Funds intended for election advertising must be held in transparent accounts. The requirement applies to political parties, candidates for regional governor, mayors and heads of larger towns and municipalities.
Political parties may spend up to €1.5m ($1.7m) on their campaigns.
Candidates for regional governor and the mayors of Bratislava and Kosice face a limit of €250,000 ($290,000). Spending limits for other candidates depend on the size of the municipality.
