Moscow Demands Explanation over Trump's Ukraine Remarks
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Wednesday that Russia wants to know whether US President Donald Trump has truly changed his position on the war in Ukraine following the G7 summit.
He was responding to remarks by French President Emmanuel Macron, who said that during the meeting in Evian, Trump acknowledged that Moscow is not interested in a peaceful resolution to the conflict. Macron described this as a "real change in approach" on the part of the United States.
"As far as Ukraine is concerned, we want to understand what happened in Evian", Lavrov said. He added that Washington has not yet informed Russia of the conclusions it drew from the summit or of its next steps.
The Russian foreign minister also recalled last year's talks between Trump and Vladimir Putin in Anchorage, Alaska. According to Moscow, the foundation for a possible agreement on Ukraine was laid there, but Lavrov cited Macron's assertion that these agreements were "buried" at Evian.
Despite growing frustration, Lavrov said, Russia wants to continue the dialogue with the United States. However, he criticized ongoing US sanctions, support for arming Ukraine and the lack of progress on other bilateral issues.
