Russia Declares State of Emergency in Annexed Crimea
Russian occupation authorities in Crimea have declared a state of emergency following a series of intense Ukrainian attacks that damaged energy infrastructure and caused widespread power outages, according to The Moscow Times.
The measure applies to the entire peninsula, including Sevastopol, and, according to local officials, is intended to expedite damage repairs, the payment of compensation and support for businesses affected by the crisis. It also allows authorities to restrict the movement of residents.
Power outages have also disrupted water supplies in Sevastopol, home to Russia's Black Sea Fleet. Authorities have suspended shipping in the bay, and traffic jams lasting several hours have formed on the Crimean Bridge. The number of train connections between Crimea and Russia has also been reduced because of the ongoing attacks.
The peninsula has also been struggling with fuel shortages for several weeks following Ukrainian attacks on supply routes, a situation that is significantly affecting the local economy, which depends on tourism.
According to media reports, interest in vacations in Crimea has plummeted, and the number of canceled hotel reservations has risen by approximately 88% year-over-year.
