Vatican Pauses Dialogue with Protestant Churches

The Vatican and the Community of Protestant Churches in Europe (CPCE) will suspend their official theological dialogue for approximately two years. Both sides emphasized that this is not an end to their cooperation but rather a pause intended to allow them to evaluate the results achieved so far and determine the conditions for continuing the talks. They plan to hold a new meeting between 2027 and 2028, according to the Infocatólica website.

The main obstacle turned out to be the very nature of the CPCE, which brings together Lutheran, Reformed, Methodist and United churches.

According to CPCE President Rita Famos, Vatican representatives have repeatedly pointed out that the CPCE lacks a unified confessional identity, which complicates the traditional model of bilateral dialogue.

The CPCE was established on the basis of the 1973 Leuenberg Agreement, which enabled mutual recognition of the pastoral ministry and joint communion among several Protestant churches.

At the same time, however, both sides acknowledged that the negotiations to date have fostered greater mutual understanding and helped identify areas of agreement as well as issues that require further theological clarification.
