Austria Sets New June Temperature Record at 40.1C

Austria has set a new June temperature record for the third consecutive day. On Monday, the temperature reached 40.1C in the town of Bad Deutsch-Altenburg in the district of Bruck an der Leitha.

Only a few days earlier, Austria's June record stood at 38.6C, set in Waidhofen an der Ybbs in 2013. Temperatures climbed to 39.3C in Bad Deutsch-Altenburg on Saturday and reached 40C in Vienna on Sunday before Monday's new record.

Bad Deutsch-Altenburg also holds Austria's all-time temperature record of 40.5C, recorded on 8 August 2013.

According to ORF's weather service, Monday marked only the third day in more than 250 years of meteorological records that temperatures in Austria have reached or exceeded 40C.

The heat wave also brought widespread tropical nights, with temperatures remaining above 20C. Ninety of Austria's 280 weather stations recorded such conditions. At the Jubiläumswarte station in Vienna's Ottakring district, the overnight low was 27.3C, the highest nighttime temperature ever recorded in Austria.
