Venezuela Earthquake Death Toll Rises to 1,943

The death toll from last week's twin earthquakes in Venezuela has risen to 1,943, the country's parliamentary speaker, Jorge Rodríguez, announced on Tuesday. The number of injured has nearly doubled to 10,571, while 6,461 people have been rescued, according to Reuters.

The two earthquakes, with magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5, struck Venezuela on Thursday night. The northern state of La Guaira and the coastal region north of Caracas sustained the heaviest damage. A total of 189 buildings collapsed completely.

Rescue teams from around the world are arriving in Venezuela to assist with search and recovery efforts.
