Trump Calls US Support for NATO Ridiculous
US President Donald Trump said on Thursday that it was “ridiculous” for the United States to continue what he called its one-sided relationship with NATO, less than a week before the alliance’s summit in Ankara.
Trump wrote on Truth Social: “Ridiculous for the U.S.A. to continue along this one sided path when the relationship is not reciprocal. They were not there for us!!!”
He attached a chart showing NATO spending, with the United States far above the other member states depicted.
Trump has repeatedly criticized European allies over their response to the war in Iran. He has also insisted that Europe should take the lead in its own defense, while Washington has already moved to scale back commitments.
NATO leaders agreed last year to raise defense spending to 5% of gross domestic product by 2035 under pressure from Trump. The alliance’s upcoming summit, bringing together all 32 member states, is scheduled for 7–8 July in the Turkish capital.
