China Tests Missile from Nuclear Submarine
China has conducted a test launch of a missile from a nuclear-powered submarine into the Pacific Ocean. State-run news agency Xinhua said the launch was a routine part of annual military exercises and that the missile carried a training warhead.
Beijing said the test was not directed at any country or specific target. Nevertheless, the launch prompted concern among several countries in the region. Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong said China had notified Canberra of the test in advance but described it as a destabilizing move at a time when Beijing is rapidly expanding its military capabilities.
Japan expressed serious concern over China's growing military activity and urged Beijing to reconsider its actions. New Zealand also criticized the use of the South Pacific for missile testing, describing it as an unwelcome development.
According to Japanese officials, the missile landed outside the country's exclusive economic zone. China last publicly conducted a test launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile in 2024.
