Lagarde Leaves Door Open to Early ECB Exit
European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde said her goal remains to complete her term, which runs until October 2027. In an interview with the French daily Les Echos, however, she declined to rule out an earlier departure to take part in France's presidential race.
Lagarde said that in times of economic uncertainty, the "captain of the ship" should remain at the helm. At the same time, she stressed the need for a strong European voice in France's future political debate.
She warned that a weakening of France's influence within the EU could have negative consequences for both the country and its citizens. Her comments marked a softer tone than in February, when she dismissed speculation about leaving the ECB before the end of her mandate.
According to economist Jörg Krämer, the remarks may also reflect an effort to limit the influence of France's political right over the selection of the ECB's next president.
