Guterres Calls for Global AI Rules
UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned at a conference in Geneva that the development of artificial intelligence is outpacing regulation. He said a globally coordinated framework is needed to mitigate potential risks, particularly for children.
Speaking at the first global intergovernmental dialogue on AI governance, Guterres said the technology has the potential to transform economies, reshape labor markets and influence elections and global security. However, he warned that AI is advancing faster than even its creators can fully understand.
"Innovation needs guardrails. If AI is to be powerful, it must be governed", Guterres said.
The two-day meeting in Geneva is not intended to produce an international treaty but to discuss principles that could help reduce the risks posed by AI while maximizing its benefits. Participants are reviewing a report prepared by an independent UN-backed scientific panel of 40 experts. The document is the first global independent scientific assessment of artificial intelligence.
A more comprehensive report is expected next year, alongside a second global meeting to be held in New York.
