Appeals Court Clears Path for Marine Le Pen to Run in 2027
On Tuesday, a French appeals court upheld Marine Le Pen’s conviction for embezzlement of European Union funds, but at the same time reduced the length of her ban on running for elected office. The decision may once again pave the way for her to run in the 2027 presidential election.
The court also ruled that Le Pen must serve a three-year prison sentence. Two years of the sentence are suspended, and she will be required to wear an electronic monitoring bracelet for one year.
The verdict also raises new questions about whether Le Pen will ultimately decide to run for president. The requirement to wear an electronic monitoring bracelet could significantly complicate any potential election campaign of hers, both politically and practically.
