Trump Revives Greenland Row at NATO Summit

At the NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey, US President Donald Trump reiterated that Greenland should be under US control rather than Denmark's, reviving an issue that has long been a source of tension among NATO allies.

Trump raised the issue in comments to reporters during a meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen later stressed that allies must respect the sovereignty of the Kingdom of Denmark and accept that Greenland is not for sale.

Greenland's Foreign Minister Mute Egede wrote on social media that only the island's residents can decide its future. He added that Greenland wants to continue working closely with its allies.

Trump also said the dispute over Greenland has strained relations between the US and other NATO members. He argued that Denmark is not investing enough in the island's development, which he described as strategically important to the US because of the presence of Chinese and Russian ships in the region.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in June that talks between the US, Denmark and Greenland are continuing on a monthly basis.
