OpenAI to Launch GPT-5.6 After US Security Review
OpenAI will publicly launch its most capable artificial intelligence model, GPT-5.6, on Thursday after delaying the release last month at the request of the US government amid national security concerns, Reuters reported.
According to Axios, which first reported the news, the US Department of Commerce approved a broad launch of GPT-5.6 after additional government testing under Washington’s new oversight framework for frontier AI.
OpenAI had initially limited access to the model to a small group of vetted partners whose details were shared with the authorities. The company now plans to launch GPT-5.6 Sol, along with the Terra and Luna models, it said in a post on X late on Tuesday.
Washington has stepped up scrutiny of advanced AI releases over concerns that the technology could be misused by military or intelligence services in China, Russia or other countries of concern.
The new framework allows developers to voluntarily offer the US government access to “covered frontier models” for up to 30 days before releasing them to trusted partners.
