Police Raid Bolsonaro's Home over Weapons
On Wednesday, the Brazilian federal police searched the home of former President Jair Bolsonaro in an effort to find illegal firearms and ammunition. The raid took place just days after Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes allowed the 71-year-old politician to continue serving his 27-year prison sentence under house arrest.
The decision was not altered even by an incident last month, when a police patrol seized a firearm belonging to the former president from a member of his security detail.
Bolsonaro was required under an earlier court order to surrender all his firearms. Judge Moraes authorized the raid to seize any firearms, ammunition or documents to which the convicted man might have access. The search of the residence itself was brief.
According to a statement by Bolsonaro's lawyer, Joao Henrique de Freitas, on the social media platform X, police found nothing in the house, as the defense had previously informed the authorities exactly where the weapons were located.
The lawyer added that part of the arsenal was seized by the federal police and the rest is in the possession of the military. The judge, however, countered that at least one weapon has still not been found.
