UK Tribunal Rules "Colored" Was Not Racial Harassment
A UK employment tribunal has dismissed a complaint by administrative assistant Amy Reeves, who alleged she was subjected to racial discrimination after a colleague referred to two women as "colored ladies", according to GB News.
Reeves, who is of British-Jamaican heritage, said the remark had troubled her from her first days at the company. However, the tribunal ruled that the isolated use of the term did not amount to racial harassment or discrimination.
The tribunal found that the colleague had not intended to cause offense and had used the phrase without racist intent. The judge acknowledged that the term "colored" is now widely regarded as outdated and may be considered offensive by some people.
Nevertheless, the tribunal concluded that, in the circumstances of the case, the incident did not meet the legal threshold for unlawful workplace harassment.
