Khamenei Buried as Crowds Chant Against Trump
After a week of mourning ceremonies, Iran buried Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Thursday in Mashhad. The funeral took place amid renewed tensions between Iran and the United States following the collapse of a weeks-long truce.
Thousands of mourners marched through the streets of Mashhad carrying Iranian flags, portraits of the late supreme leader and banners bearing revolutionary slogans. Some participants also chanted calls for revenge against US President Donald Trump and carried signs reading "Kill Trump."
Khamenei's successor, his son Mojtaba Khamenei, has yet to appear in public. According to reports, he suffered serious injuries, including wounds to his face and limbs, in the attack that killed his father. Iranian media say he is recovering, while security forces are reportedly limiting his public appearances over fears of further US attacks.
The funeral comes as Iran grapples with domestic challenges and growing debate over the legacy of Ali Khamenei's nearly 37-year rule. During his tenure, power became increasingly concentrated in the hands of the supreme leader and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, which also backed Mojtaba Khamenei's rise.
