EU Seeks Tougher Action Against Migrant Smugglers
The European Union has proposed a new sanctions framework aimed at combating migrant smuggling, human trafficking and other forms of organized crime. It calls for asset freezes and travel bans for individuals involved in these activities.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the goal is to deprive smugglers of their livelihoods while saving the lives of thousands of people who, in her words, dream of a better life. She also emphasized that Europe must decide for itself who enters its territory and under what conditions.
The proposal must still be unanimously approved by the European Council before it can take effect.
The initiative comes amid intense debate over migration policy in the EU. Last month, the European Parliament approved a reform of migration rules aimed at streamlining the return of rejected asylum seekers and allowing for the establishment of detention centers outside the EU.
The measures have drawn criticism from several countries, including France and Spain. Opponents argue that the reform is too strict and weakens protections for asylum seekers.
