Trump Says US Will Continue Talks with Iran
The United States will continue negotiations with Iran after Tehran requested them, according to US President Donald Trump. At the same time, however, he emphasized that the June ceasefire is no longer in effect.
"The Islamic Republic of Iran has asked us to continue 'talks.' We have agreed to do so, but the United States has stated to them, in no uncertain terms, that the Cease Fire is OVER!" Trump wrote on the social media platform Truth Social.
The statement came after another escalation of tensions between the two countries. On Thursday, Iranian armed forces attacked US military infrastructure in the Gulf states in response to US strikes on Iran's southern coastal and eastern provinces.
Yet last month, the United States and Iran had reached a temporary agreement intended to end a four-month conflict that had been disrupting global energy supplies.
According to Reuters, the continued fighting is increasing pressure on Trump, who has failed to end the conflict. The situation is further complicated by rising fuel prices and voter dissatisfaction ahead of this year's congressional elections.
