New Portugal Coach Backs Ronaldo for 2030 World Cup

Portugal's national football team will be led by new head coach Jorge Jesus through the 2030 World Cup, and the 71-year-old has made clear that 41-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo remains part of his plans. According to the coach, age will not be a deciding factor in squad selection.

Jesus signed a four-year contract with the Portuguese Football Federation, replacing Spaniard Roberto Martinez, whose contract expired after Portugal's 1-0 defeat by Spain in the World Cup round of 16.

The experienced coach managed Ronaldo at Saudi club Al Nassr last season.

“Age doesn't matter. Look at Cris. Under me, he used to cover 8 kilometers per match, reaching speeds above 25 kilometers per hour”, he said.

After the World Cup, Ronaldo announced his retirement from the tournament, although he left the door open to future appearances for the national team. With 233 international appearances and 146 goals, he remains Portugal's all-time record holder in both categories. He scored three goals at the 2026 World Cup but also drew criticism from some fans.

“I haven't spoken to Cris yet. He will never be a problem for the national team or for me”, the coach said. “Cris is a symbol of Portugal. He will go down in history. If he is in a position to be called up, I will do so”, he added.
