EU Prolongs Temporary Protection for Ukrainians Until 2028

EU member states agreed on Wednesday to extend temporary protection for refugees from Ukraine for another year, through March 2028. At the same time, they approved a new requirement for future applicants.

Under the new rules, applicants will have to prove they have fulfilled their military service obligations in Ukraine, according to a joint EU statement.

The requirement will apply only to people who apply for temporary protection after the measure takes effect. Ukrainians already receiving temporary protection in EU member states will not be affected.
