Reuters: Future of Ukraine's Defense Minister Uncertain
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is preparing for another cabinet reshuffle, with attention focused on Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, according to Reuters. Some in the opposition, however, say his potential dismissal could harm the stability of the ministry and, consequently, Ukraine's war effort.
Fedorov, 35, has led the Defense Ministry for only six months. During this time, he has focused on modernizing the military, streamlining procurement and expanding the production and deployment of drones. His supporters say he has disrupted entrenched bureaucracy, while critics accuse him of moving too slowly on military recruitment reform.
Following Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko's announcement of a cabinet reshuffle, the entire government resigned. The president appoints the ministers of defense and foreign affairs, but their nominations must be approved by parliament. Some lawmakers have suggested that Fedorov may not secure the necessary support in Thursday's vote.
