Pentagon Orders Testosterone Tests for Troops Over 30
US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced mandatory annual testosterone screening for troops aged 30 and over, arguing that deficiencies can undermine health.
The tests could lead to offers of testosterone replacement therapy aimed at “ensuring you have the right testosterone levels to operate at your absolute best”.
“Because it's well-established science that as we age, testosterone levels often naturally drop”, Hegseth said in a video message.
The screening will form part of annual medical examinations. Troops diagnosed with low testosterone may voluntarily accept treatment, while those under 30 may request testing.
The move comes as the US Department of Health and Human Services seeks to ease restrictions on testosterone replacement therapy for men with age-related low levels.
Democrats criticized the announcement, citing Hegseth’s ban on transgender service members who often rely on hormone therapy.
