Zelensky Nominates SBU Chief as Defense Minister

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has nominated Yevhen Khmara, the acting head of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), as acting defense minister and will ask Parliament to approve the appointment.

Zelensky announced the decision on Telegram, saying Khmara's experience at the SBU would help him lead the country's defense.

He highlighted the security service's role in organizing and carrying out long-range strikes against targets in Russia, which he said demonstrated its capabilities.

Zelensky also said he had tasked Khmara with continuing reforms in the defense sector and ensuring Ukraine achieves its strategic goals during the war with Russia.

The appointment remains subject to approval by Parliament.
