Wildfire Smoke Fuels US-Canada Tariff Dispute

President Donald Trump has accused Canada of failing to prevent wildfires, smoke from which has once again affected large areas of the Midwest and Northeast of the United States. He announced he would add "pollution costs" to existing tariffs on Canadian imports, which he claims are linked to fires originating across the border.

Trump also said he intends to discuss the situation with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. Ottawa has rejected his claims. Minister of Emergency Management and Community Resilience Eleanor Olszewski pointed to billions of dollars in investments in forest protection and emphasized the two countries' long-standing cooperation in fighting wildfires.

In Ontario, more land has already burned this year than during the same period last year, and thousands of people have been forced to leave their homes. According to local officials, one indigenous community has been almost completely destroyed.
