Tisza Backs Chess Legend Judit Polgar for President
The parliamentary caucus of Hungary's Tisza party has unanimously endorsed chess legend Judit Polgar's candidacy for the presidency.
Caucus chair Andrea Bujdoso announced the decision, adding that lawmakers will make a final decision at their next meeting.
Prime Minister Peter Magyar said on Sunday that he would ask Polgar to temporarily assume the largely ceremonial role of head of state. She is expected to serve in the position until a new Hungarian constitution is adopted.
Polgar is widely regarded as the greatest female chess player in history and is one of Hungary's best known athletes.
If confirmed, her appointment would mark a significant departure from the traditional practice of nominating career politicians for the presidency. The nomination is not yet final, however, as Tisza lawmakers must formally approve it.
